The State of Cheese Steak in Seattle

So if you read my earlier post, you could tell I was little peeved at the actions of some cheese steak vendors, making lettuce and tomato part of the default cheese steak configuration. I stopped by Philly Fevre the other day since I remember them offering an authentic cheese steak experience. Thank God they still do. I talked to the people working and they informed me that the owners are from Philly and know the true cheese steak. I really enjoy supporting a place that takes pride in their food, and suggest to meat eaters in the area that you stop Philly Fevre

Philly Fevre

• Great Cheese Steaks
• No crap like lettuce or tomatoes unless you ask for it
• Tasty Cakes
• Free Wifi
• Punch Cards for frequent steakers, to get yourself a freebie
• Excellent “at home” feel if you are dinning in

This place beats the pants off of the cheese steak place on 23rd that used to be Philly’s Best. Elo’s on airport way south comes no where close, however I have not tried Dan’s on the ave. So that will be my next stop.

In the meantime let me know if you come across any other Seattle based cheese steak shops that are worthy of evaluation.

Life with a Dog in Seattle

So its been over a month now since Sadie has entered my life. I just recently realized I haven’t written anything about her. First off let me say that I share your fear when I think about the fact that some other creature is dependent on me for their substinance. However I it has been quite interesting how effortless the adaptation has been for me. Between the feeding walking, exercise, and general attention there is probably about three hours out of every day that is dedicated dog time. This doesnt include the time that she is with me running errands getting coffee etc…

Anyways one major change I have noticed is frequenting places where I know Sadie is welcome, so here are some dog friendly places I have discovered in Seattle:

• The Comet Tavern

Although it can be smokey at times, you can take your pooch in with you when you want to grab a beer.

• The Canterbury Ales & Eats

Another watering hole on Capitol Hill in the 15th neighborhood. They have a resident cat to keep your pup company.

• Broadway Bar and Grill (outdoor seating)

Although I have not taken Sadie here, I always see people in the outdoor seating with dogs.

• Home Depot

Need to get some tools? Wood? A new toilet seat? You can take your Dog.

• The Apple Store?

This is unconfirmed if its official, but when I was there this week, someone was able to bring their dog in.

I hope to keep this list updated and possibly break it out into seperate page/site that I will maintain. So let me know you know of some others.

Seattle’s Apple Store Un Geniuses

Today I a paid a visit to the U-Village Apple store to drop of a dead powerbook we had at work. The glowing screen of 17 inch Powerbook locked down to a in store display tells me that a *Genius* will be gracing me with his/her presence in 15 minutes.

Having some time to kill I decide to sit and listen to a presentation being given on Mac OS X Server. I figured I would probably not learn much from this, but sat down anyways.

Here is quick recap of the misinformation I witnessed:

• Apache (shipping web server on OSX)
can serve static and dynamic content. According to the presenter this means that you serve content from a static or dynamic ip address. While this statement on its own is true of OSX or any operating system for that matter, I dont think thats what the *Apple Classified (yes it said that) slide was trying to say, nor is this a feature of Apache

• “If you dont want to get hacked, just shut of windows”, in this statement he was referring to the SAMBA server available in OSX. Apparently all you need to do is shut that off and you are perfectly secure. At this point I thought of mentioning the fact that SSH and Apache both standard fare on OS X Server server have had their share of remote root exploits, but I kept my mouth shut.
• If you outgrow your Xserve, all you need to do is buy another to satisfy your growth. While this may be true of computing cluster, the presentation was aimed at using OSX Server for corporate services (email, file sharing). Hmm, how does this work with email and application serving, apparently OSX has some magical clustering that deals with this… not.
• RAID5 uses checksums to back up data (think he meant striped parity). Right, so how do you reconstruct loss data from a checksum? I didn’t bother asking :)

The last thing that pissed me off was how much Microsoft bashing the presenter did. While I cant stand Microsoft as much as the next person. It always upsets me when uneducated people bash their competition without even understanding the product they are talking about. I have no problem with explaining why your product is better or meets peoples needs better than your competitor. But outright bashing without presenting facts is my opinion is very unprofessional. Recruit customers with good service, good products, and doing whatever you can to meet their needs, not by making fun of them. While I also understand that Microsoft does not necessarily heed this, and does not have some of the best marketing practices, dont stoop down to their level.

In the 5 years I have lived in Seattle I have never been to the solstice parade

Which means I have missed the naked-painted-biker parade. Luckily my co-worker went and took some really good pictures of the painting party and parade, plus a cool time lapse video of the painting party. Thanks Jacob!
