BBQ Pictures

One of the gifts I received for my birthday was a Lomography fisheye camera. It’s quite cool. It has a built in flash, fisheye lens, and takes 35mm film.

For most of the day we left the camera around for people to take pictures with. You can see the results here

Now that I have a shot a roll and can see how much area the lens captures, and what the general lighting needs are, I think I can shoot some pretty cool pictures with this thing.

Farewell Riff and Melissa

This weekend Riff and Melissa leave for NYC.

So I went last night to say farewell to them and Riff’s band at the Funhouse. In usual form they rocked so hard my face melted.

With that I will leave you my favorite Riffisims:

  • Ken: “How was work today Riff?
  • Riff: “Stupid” (emphasis on the “stu”)
lather, rinse and repeat. It never gets old I swear.

  • Riff: “I ain’t gonna lie to you Ken… (insert any true statement here)”
  • Ken: “Riff to be!”
  • Riff: “Kenji!”

Some may think of our banter as nonsense, I consider it an art of communicating so much more by saying so much less.

Writebacks are hosed, I know

For some reason, in the past couple of months my comments/writebacks have become all sorts of screwed up. Sometimes when people post comments, proper line endings are not always put into the file that tracks comments for that post, so it ends up hosing the parser and the end result is that sometimes if you comment, it will attribute your comment to the person before you.

Have no fear, I am lazily aware of this and fixing them manually, while searching the far ends of cyberspace for the secret space meat that will help me fix it.

Chez Ken, Gastronomique @ Burning Man

So here is my tentative menu for our week out in the playa. Figuring out what to eat for a week without a fridge or freezer, and limited cooking surface is a lot harder than I thought.
If you have ever seen me suffer through my “not enough food” paranoia when preparing food for a single day or meal, you can only imagine what I am going through now. Although the times that I have gone
on three or four day camping trips I have always stuffed my 7300 cubic inch back pack w/food. Despite all the nay-saying of my camping mates at the beginning, the food was almost always all gone at the end with them left wondering how hungry we would have been otherwise.

Heading to the Playa

This Saturday I leave for Burning Man for the first time. I am pretty damn excited and rushing around to tie up all the last minutes loose ends. I am camping with one other person, although we will probably camp on in a spot with some of his friends. But we will be self sufficent in regards to food, water, etc…

My main job is taking care of all the food. My plan so far is to load up one cooler of dry ice to freeze any perishables we may want to eat later in the week, and then have another cooler that we refill with ice each day for stuff that we want to defrost or keep unfrozen.

Our original plan was to take the Taxi but it has a lot of little things that could use some attention, so we are sacraficing style for reliability instead and taking a fairly new ford ranger pickup truck. This will also be easier on our wallets in regards to petrol.

So I really don’t know what to expect, but imagine its going to be a lot of fun and probably trying at times. After all living in the dessert for a week with practically no luxuries will probably wear on me.

I plan on bringing my laptop as there is some internet love via satelite, while I wont really be checking email, I might attempt to post some pictures or blog posts if I get around to it.

Google Talk

Well if you have not heard already Google Talk is accepting login requests. Someone discovered earlier the that boxes resolving to talk.google.com were in fact running a Jabber server and of now they have figured out that you can login with your Gmail username and password.

While the last thing I need is another IM account. I am happy that they decided the Jabber protocol instead of doing something proprietary, I imagine that they are going to release a client but those of us with IM clients that already support Jabber don’t need to use it.

So I have been screwing around with Adium, it appears as though they require TLS to connect which is a good thing. If I enable plain text authentication and disable TLS, I get an authentication error. However I have not had a conversation with anyone yet over “talk” so I have not been able to look at a packet dump of a conversation to confirm that those are encrypted as well. But I would imagine that they are, since the jabber servers I have used in the past use TLS for the entire session.
