gpsd for pyramid linux

At the request of Darrin, I just built gpsd for Pyramid Linux. I don’t have all the gps gear to test it fully but I loaded it up on a soekris board at home and it starts up with no problems. I stuck here for now: http://ken.ipl31.net/pyramid/

I stripped out all the man pages per usual, and did not include the python scripts and binaries the make file puts in /usr/bin, its just the gpsd binary and supporting library. Untar it from / and it will stick stuff in the respective /usr/local directories.

Softball!

Well we are a little over one week into the Softball Season. So far so good. Our team made a fine first showing, we beat The Garage Team both games of the double header. The Garage took the championship away from us in the final round of the playoffs last year, so this is a big win for us.

This Sunday at Dahl Field we will be playing a double header against The Comet, starting at noon.
On another note, we have the launched the Industrial League website.

Hack Night Summary - April 12

Getting ready to head out from hack night but things still appear to be going strong. So far this evening:

-Some update on the status of the Node at the Ambassador building.

-Eric Butler’s friend whose name I can’t remember was dissecting an Iriver h320 and replacing the battery with a higher capacity third party Ipod gen 2 battery.

-Discussing wireless network for MindCamp 2.0 . Myself Richard, and possibly Casey will be handling it. My thoughts are to use WifiDog for the portal page and randomly aggregate information on the portal page from all the attendees, since we will have that information ahead of time.

-We added brctl and supporting library to pyramid linux.

-I imagine Matt will post some photos to his flickr account.

Mind Camp 2.0

I briefly mentioned Seattle Mind Camp 1.0 when I attended about 6 months ago. Seattle Mind Camp 2.0 is coming up in just over two weeks. They are seeking to expand their geek diversity , so if you can think someone that should been there last time and wasn’t let’em know.

LayerOne this weekend

Myself and bunch of people from DC206 are flying down to LA on Friday for LayerOne. LayerOne is whats generally referred to as a Hacker Con, with topics including things like lock picking, hardware hacking, and information security. I will be leading off the festivities on Saturday morning with a talk about Seattlewireless and Freenetworks in
general. Community Wireless/Freenetworks ( I use the terms synonmously) is a topic that generally has not gotten a ton of attention at hacker cons. I presented at Defcon 5 years ago, Adam and Xam discussed it in a couple of the Shmoo talks around the same time. Wireless in general on the other hand has obviously gotten a ton a coverage at Hacker Cons, because of all the inherent
security problems.

So I guess these are my goals for the talk:

-Reiterate to the hacker community that yes security is important, but so is building networks that benefit the greater good.

-A breif history of Seattlewireless and the Community Wireless Movement

-Some discussion on advancements in this space (mesh routing protocols, radio technology)

-Why the CWN movement is now more important than ever, some discussion on Net Neutrality

-What people can do to help our voices be heard by the FCC, Congress etc…

If anyone has any feedback on other things they would like to hear about, feel free to comment on this post or email me and I will see what I can do. Also LayerOne has a blog, I imagine they will be updating over the course of the conference.

When google tells you your spelling sucks

So I did a google search “Net Nuetraility” looking for some specific papers on “Net Neutrality”.  Of course I spelled it wrong. According to google I am one of  the very few people on
the web who spelled it this way, you can imagine my initial confusion when my blog came up first on the results page, woops. Its not so much that I don’t know how to spell, but more that my hands tend to be programmed to make the same typing errors over and over again. Its has gotten better over the years considering that a proof reader, reads my blog and harasses me about my spelling. So I pay more attention, but a few still slip through the cracks.

Quality Inn Survey

So one of the running themes this past weekend was the Quality Inn Hotel. This is where Matt and I stayed. The Canadians stayed there one night and then checked out after being less than impressed with “Quality” of the Quality Inn. When asked how the hotel was, my response was “They definitely got the INN part down”. However they had free wifi in the rooms and it was close to the waffle house.

Anyways, I found it amusing that I received a survey from Choice Hotels, the owner of the Quality Inn. I am not going to fill out, but I figured someone else might want to :)

We value your input!  Our records indicate that you recently stayed at a Choice Hotels property – thank you for choosing us!  Please take a moment to complete a Choice Hotels guest satisfaction survey for a 03/30/2006 stay at the Quality Inn & Suites Historic St. Charles in Saint Charles, MO. Completing this survey by 04/14/2006 will help us continue to improve our customer service. Thank you.

Ecto Borkage

I have been evaluating Ecto for the past two days as my main interface to updating this site. I find it much easier to use than the standard wordpress web gui, and its good for working offline as well. So this morning I spent a decent chunk of time on a post and went back to it a couple of times over the course of the day. When I was ready to post, I realized that the proxy I go through at work would not allow me to post, and ecto could
not authenticate to it. No biggie, I will just post it later. Later on I jump on a hotspot and ecto appeared to post my entry, then poof…. No post on my site, and its gone from ecto. Frustration ensues.

It is more than likely a problem related to the captive portal of the network I was on because I had not yet authenticated and the redirect potentially accepted the HTTP POST from ecto and returned a 200 when attempting to redirect ecto to the portal page, then ecto assumed the story was posted, or possibly just that my wordpress installation borked itself temporarily. At least that it what sounds like according to this http://ecto.kung-foo.tv/archives/001564.php  .
They have had a similiar issue with blogger. Where the web service reports the story was posted so ecto deletes the draft.

If you use ecto I would suggest that you disable the ”delete draft after posting?” check box in the options panel. This will insure that you do not get spanked by this.
